Use turmeric to make your own hand dyed yarn
You can make your own hand dyed yarn is fun, rewarding and cheap. It’s not that hard to do either, and with a little practice you will do that yarn is beautiful and unique. Here is a recipe using turmeric.
This dye is made from turmeric, which you buy at your local supermarket. Dye of turmeric give your wool with a beautiful brownish-yellow color. On cotton the color will be more like ocher.
First thing to do to your yarn dyed by hand. Different fibers take dye differently. All-wool yarn will color much lighter than other fibers, while the cotton in a subtle, pastel colors when hand dyed. You will find that with the same color on a wool fiber and cotton fiber can produce fibers of different colors.
All you need to dye yarn is what you find in the kitchen. In fact, dyeing yarn was once very common in many households and was usually in the kitchen and wash house. The following points are what you need.
1. A sharp knife and chopped off.
2. You need pots. Do not use the coating with anti-stick materials. Use an old pot made of stainless.
3. A stove.
4. A timer as a clock. The timer is the time over a long period of time.
5. A pair of tongs or spoon to the yarn. If you plan on dying different colors in the same time, you need another pair of spoons to avoid accidentally mixing colors.
6. You need a chair or something to dry your yarn.
7. Take detailed notes, so you repeat the process at a later date.
Making the turmeric stain.
This quantity is sufficient for 2 balls of wool or cotton: 1 ounce of ground turmeric, water 3 quarts.
Bring the mixture to a boil and stir gently. Simmer for 30 minutes.
Bundle the yarn for dying in one lock. The dye must be able to mix freely, so make sure that the yarn loosely loop, but also ensure it is secured so that no confusion: this is important because you do not want to spend too much time if it’s wet unravel. Wool yarn will felt together, if, during the drying, it is crucial that you join. Take the bundle is simple:
Wind the yarn into a large loop. Try packing around the back of a chair or in the packaging to your arm from the fingers or below the elbow and back.
Tie the yarn loosely it in two places with short sections.
Double the loop when your path is small. This is done by turning it into a smaller circle and tie it with two short pieces of yarn.
Bring the bath to a boil.
You want to dampen the yarn through a dip in the water and wrestling it out. This is important because it helps the spread of dye through the yarn smoothly.
Place the yarn in the dye bath.
Cook the yarn for 30 minutes. When the water evaporates, so that the yarn is not covered, add more water.
The longer you leave the yarn it needs more color. Test the color by a small section and rinsing. If you then remove all the color the yarn or else let it boil.
If the yarn is finished simmering, remove it from the bath and rinse in cold water until the water runs clear. KEEP the dye bath until the yarn is completely dry, and you know that you are happy with the color. Important, you should rinse the yarn with soap and water. It is better to find out that your yarn is not color-fast now than later when you have something.
Gently ring out of the yarn.
Cut the second set of relations on the yarn, but leave the first, so that the yarn is in a great loop.
If you die, wool, you put it back on chair, return it into a ball and then return back into its loop. This is because some of the strands have felt something together in May. The winding is unfelt fibers, felt, it is much easier to do this if it is damp.
Hang the yarn and let it drip-dry.
