What kind of chicken sounds best for me?(PLEASE ANSWER!!)?
I don’t want a broody chicken. Want it to be quite. Lays a lot of big eggs. I don’t want it to be flighty. Here are some I am thinking about getting: Black Star, Red Star, Plymouth Rock, Houdan, and California White. Any other suggestions would be good. I just don’t want any of these chickens: Red Shavers, Faverolles, Rhode Island Red, Australorp, Buff Orpington, Brahma, or Delaware.
Thank you very much can you answer this question? Are easter eggers, black star, red star, and sussex chickens quite I do not want them to be to loud.
California White- They are very leghorn like, but are a hybrid breed for more vigor. They are fast developing, and make great egg layers. They are a little more winter hardy then the Leghorn. They are not known for broodyness. Mine very skittish, and lost a lot of feathers. (Not sure why, they were healthy and so forth. They didn’t look like they were missing any feathers, but they would leave tons of them where ever they went.)
You seem to be having difficultly with the non-broody calm chicken. The reason for this is because excluding gamefowl the average broody chicken is calm/friendly. The non-brooding breeds are either bred for egg production, or ornamental purposes where tameness isn’t a necessary.
If you didn’t try this out yet then it may help you determine a bird that is good for you. It askes questions of what you desire, and then sorts out the breeds for you http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/which-breed-is-right-for-me.aspx
You may also want to try Easter Eggers, it is a walk into the dark. However, none of mine ever brooded, and they all had unique looks/personalities. If not then I am thinking a production brown egg laying hybrid may be the best bird for you.
Best wishes,
