Real Madrid wins but loses Ronaldo for the next game, Inter is now only two points away from Milan, Chelsea snatched third place from Manchester City, and Bayern Leverkusen adds excitement to the Bundesliga.
Barcelona dedicates victory to Abidal
Eric Abidal, the French defender from Barcelona, had to go throw surgery this past Thursday after being detected a liver tumor early in the week. His teammates therefore wanted to win the home game against Getafe for week 29 of the Liga BBVA to dedicate the victory to him.
Their good intentions were going to have a happy ending thanks to the goals from Alves and Bojan in the first and second half respectively. Manu shorten distances for the visitors with three minutes to go before the end, and Getafe didn’t have time for more. Barcelona won 2-1 and continues as the solo leader of the competition with 78 points.
Five points (73) behind comes Real Madrid that also won 2-1, but on the road against their city rival Atletico de Madrid. Two first half goals from Benzema and Ozil gave the Whites the lead that made Aguero’s second half goal useless for the home team. Valencia lost at home 1-0 to Sevilla with Rakitic’s goal and also lost No. 3 to Villareal, as the Yellow Submarine defeated Athletic on the road 0-1. Ruben scored the goal that allowed his team to reach 54 points, the same as Valencia, but they win the tiebreaker due to better goal average.
Milan compromises its first place
Serie A leader Milan lost to Palermo 1-0 on the road during week 30 action. Goian’s first half goal leaves the team in a very uncomfortable situation, as Milan plays No. 2 Inter next week, in a game that if they lose will cost them the first place, for only two points (Milan 62, Inter 60) separates them.
The defending champions put themselves in that position thanks to their home win against Lecce by 1-0. Pazzini scored the winner for Inter at minute 52.
No 3. Napoli is also in the fight for the title with 59 points after defeating Cagliari 2-1 at home. All goals came in the second half: Cavani gave the home team the lead through a penalty kick, Acquafresca got the equalizer for the visitors, but then Cavani scored again and sealed the victory for Napoli.
And Udinese consolidates as No. 4 with their 2-0 win at home versus Catania. Inler in the first half and Di Natale in the second one helped their team reach 56 points, two more than their closest contender Lazio.
The Citizens lose No. 3 to the Blues
With two goals from David Luiz and Ramirez in the second half Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-0 at home, and snatched No. 3 from them in the Premier League during round 30 action. The Blues reached 54 points and have one pending game, while the Citizens stay at 53 finishing fourth for the week.
The solo leader Manchester United didn’t fail at home and defeated Bolton Wanderers 1-0 to continue on top of the standings with 63 points. The winning goal came only until minute 88 through Berbatov, in a game that was starting to look as if it was going to end up in a draw.
And No. 2 Arsenal rescued one point form their visit to West Bromwich, after being down in the game by 2-0. Reid and Odemwingie gave the host the lead, but thanks to Arshavin and Van Persie the Gunners got the equalizer. With this result Arsenal has 58 points and one pending match.
Second setback in a row for the leader
Borussia Dortmund suffered another setback this weekend. Although they didn’t lose like last week, they did let two important points escape at home with their draw to one against Mainz 05 on Saturday. Hummels gave the Bundesliga leaders the lead in the first half, but Sliskovic scored the equalizer for the visitors in the last minutes. This result leaves No. 1 Borussia Dortmund with 62 points after 27 rounds and No. 5 Mainz with 44.
No. 2 Bayern Leverkusen has made the best from the leader’s setbacks to shorten distances and place themselves at just seven points away from them. They defeated Schalke 04 at home by 2-0 and reached 55 points. Both goals came in the first half through Derdiyok and Metzelder, who scored an own goal.
In third place and with 50 points comes Hannover 96 that defeated Hoffenheim 2-0 at home with one goal in each half from Ya Konan and Abdellaoue respectively.
And No. 4 Bayern Munich was also victorious this weekend after defeating Freiburg on the road by 2-1, to reach 48 points. Gomez gave the defending champions the lead at minute 9, eight minutes later Cisse evened the score for the hosts and in 88 minute Ribery scored the winner for Bayern Munich.
