The Belgian Draught Horse
As the name suggests. This breeds roots can be traced from Belgium. Medievil times saw the popularity of the “Flemish” horse, a large, black horse found in the centre of Western Europe. These horses are the ones which carried the armour-clad knights to war. By necessity, only the largest and strongest of this breed were trained as “chargers” or “destriers”. Other draught breeds drew genetic material from this stock. At the heart of this area, Belgium was established as a country. The regions stallions’ were shipped throughout Europe as larger draught horses were demanded to work in both agricultural and industrial environments.
Because Belgium was the supply upon which other countries relied for such large stock horses, all that remained was for the country to establish the breed and increase the strength of the genetic makeup already at hand. The Belgian government quickly helped to refine the breed by setting up district shows, from which the winners would move up to compete in the national show in Brussels. From those who showed in the national, the finest were chosen by the country’s inspection committees to stand as stallions for public service. As a result of this, the fixed-breed improved substancially, and the Belgian horse was established as a national treasure.
When the Belgian was first brought into America, they were slated for being “too thick, too low-headed, straight shouldered, and round-boned”. The Belgians however soon found work with the American breeders who loved their temperament, eagerness to work and strength. The Belgian remained and the American horse breeders aimed to correct any wrongdoings. As a result it is considered one of the most successful breeding stories ever told. The American Belgain has many good attributes including good bone and muscle structure, strong feet, a solid middle and a good disposition. The breed is a hard worker, ships well and is easy to maintain. American breeders very simply developed a horse with cleaner lines, more slope in the shoulders and pasterns, and a more elegant look around the head and neck.
Description
As far as color, while the first Belgians to be brought into to America were a wide mix, about 50% were bay and bay-brown. There was however, no particular colour which was considered a defining characteristic. Through breeding, shown by American preference, the ideal for a Belgian in the U.S. today is a chestnut or sorrel with a snow-white mane and tail, a white stripe on the face, and four white socks. A large selection of colours can still be found in other areas of the globe.
In height, Belgian horses are usually 16 hands (162.5 centimeters, or 64 inches) at the shoulder, but can exceed 18 hands (183 cm or 72 inches) to the shoulder. American Belgian horses are normally found to have a bigger head, more stunted and compact legs (feathered) and big hind-quarters.
The average weight is 1600 to 2000 lbs (113.6 to 142 stones), but Belgian stallions can exceed 2400 pounds (170.4 stones).
