What do you do if the alkalinity in saltwater is way to high?
Ok. I have these test strips that measure the alkalinity in ppm’s for freshwater. when I test it (freshwater), it is really high. Its about 250-300 ppm which is around 15-16 KH. Now can I use the same freshwater strips for the saltwater also, or is that another test kit?
I had bought this lionfish and they (the fish guys) said the KH has to be around 12. Well it died because they didnt tell me this until after I had called and asked why it was breathing so heavy. They said that lions and puffers need a high alkalinity due to a slime coat they produce that allows them to absorb oxygen and such. Also the lions eyes had grown a haze before he died, they said that was a for sure sign of low hardness. So if my strips are correct for the freshwater then the saltwater would have to be hard also. And I have well water so there is alot of minerals and crap in it and it is not purified just filtered. So what do I do if the water alkalinity is to high?
You need an RODI unit, Or buy RODI water from a fish store. RODI water has an alk level of 7DKH
You can a RODI filter for about 100 bucks. I think that acclimation may also have been a problem. Salt water fish need to be slowly acclimated to new water, the bigger the difference in the quality of water the slower it needs to be done. You need to slowly acclimate fish to the Temperature, salinity and PH of your tank to the stores water. The easiest way to do this is the drip method. You put the fish and stores water in a bucket and using an airline start dripping water from your tank into the bucket tie a knot in the hose to control the flow until temp salinity and PH are the same in the bucket as the water in your tank .
