Partridge Feathers

Partridge Feathers
I have 6 chickens and am sooo anxious on finding out the sex. some of them like to fly and some of them are v?

very sweet they are only about a month to a month in a half and are growing wildly all of them have their feathers and are still growing more when we let them out of the coop in the afternoon for about 10 minutes to longer everyone of them come out. one of them is always the last one it chirps a lot when this happens and it has a small red starting comb on its head (about 3 of the 6 do) and no waddles. we have 3 old english hen bantams and 3 partridge cochin bantams. I’m very curious

Keep an eye on those combs! Male chicks usually develop their combs first- but don’t get confused between the breeds as Old English have relatively small comb and wattles and the Cochin has much larger.

Watch those feathers too- as the feathers become fully developed you’ll notice that the males have a more pointy shaped feather in their hackles (neck feathers) and longer pointier feathers over their saddle. The Old English males will develop two slightly longer “sickle” feathers in their tail as well which will become obvious- they’re harder to see in the Cochin because the shape of their tails is much more cushion like.

Between the two features, you should be able to pick up which ones are male and which are female before the males start to crow.

I’m willing to bet that the last chick out of the coop making all the noise is an Old English right? They can be relatively noisy birds- in fact they are one of the noisiest breeds and they will “talk” all day. If your neighbours are close by I hope they’re understanding ones!
