How to Pack for a Skiing Holiday, and other ski holiday tips
With the ski season well and truly underway here’s some of the best advice on packing your case, making sure you don’t forget anything (especially your thermals!) and also some other fantastic tips when heading off to the slopes for some winter sports!
Unlike a summer holiday, when everything you’re packing is more on the ‘teeny-weeny’ size, when you’re heading off to the slopes it’s more about thick socks, lots of layers and woolly jumpers! That’s why, physically squeezing it all into your case can sometimes be a bit tricky – and why many of us think about jumping or sitting on a case, aka movie –style, to make everything fit in!
Roll, Don’t Fold
Did you know that you’ll fit more into your suitcase if you roll it than if you are to fold it? Well it’s true. Plus it will prevent annoying ceases too!
Making it All Fit
The most useful bit of advice when packing your suitcase for a skiing holiday is to use all the space available – so that means roll up your socks and vests and wedge them into your shoes. Also, bulky goggles can be slotted into your ski boots too.
Travel In Your Bulkiest Clothes
This advice is the same whether you’re skiing or sunning yourself – wear your bulkiest clothes on the flight. You can take them off if you get too hot but it saves you room in your suitcase – your coat or ski jacket for example.
Pack Plastic Bags for Wet Clothes
If you are intending to ski on the day you fly home be sure to pack some plastic bags that can hold any wet or damp clothes. It will protect dry, clean clothes.
Fit Clothes Into Your Ski Bag
If you’re taking your skis with you consider wrapping some clothes around them, the chances are there’s room, it helps protect your skis, and it’s not forbidden by airlines either. But don’t go too mad; be sensible how much you fit in!
Baggage Allowance
Don’t forget, that just because what you’re taking with you is bigger and bulkier, doesn’t always mean you will be given any additional baggage allowance on your suitcase. Check carefully with your tour operator or airline. Some specialist ski holiday operators allow for slightly more weight, but not all operators. Do therefore be careful to check so you are not given a hefty fine at check-in!
Take Your Own Skis or Hire?
Some tour operators will include the cost of taking your own skis with you, whereas others will charge you additionally. If your operator, or airline, will charge extra to carry your skis then look into hiring your skis in resort. It might be that you can save money by hiring in resort.
Après Ski
Also consider that your evening clothes will need to be warmer too. And don’t forget good snow boots for walking to and fro your accommodation to restaurants and bars – the pathways could be snowy, icy, and slushy too.
And Don’t Forget to Pack…
•Sun block
•Lip balm and lip sun block
•Hand warmers
•Ski rental paperwork, if hiring your skis and boots
•And to book your winter sports travel insurance before you fly!
Driving to the Airport with Bulky Ski Equipment
Pre-book Meet & Greet Airport Parking
If you’re driving to the airport spare a thought for how difficult it could be to drive to an off-site car park, lug your heavy cases and bulky ski equipment out of the car, then onto a courtesy bus, then off again once you’ve reached the airport.
If that thought fills you with dread then think about pre-booking your meet and greet airport parking. Meet and greet airport parking is perfect for skiers. Simply drive straight up to the airport, where the meet and greet parking driver will be waiting for you. You walk straight into the terminal building and your car is taken to an off-site car park by the fully insured driver. You’ll be surprised at how cheap this type of airport parking is too! Especially, if you book online.
