Gear to take wild camping

Before a wild camping trip there is always the post trip packing of your backpack, which inevitably is always too heavy. Next comes the dreaded process of removing and excluding items that you think you may need but could manage without.

Here we aim to give you a minimal kit list to which you can add item to.

Sleeping

  • Sleeping bag (summer/winter bag depending on the weather forecast and time of year)
  • Tarp Shelter (some people like the security a tent offers, give a tarp/poncho a try you will love it)
  • Tarp pegs (6 should do it)
  • Tarp Pole(s)
  • Bivvy Bag (keep you dry and stops the wind getting to you)

Clothing

Wet Kit – Consisting of;

  • Socks
  • Underwear
  • Trousers/shorts
  • T-Shirt
  • Fleece
  • Jacket (softshell/waterproof)
  • Hat/Headover

Dry Kit – Consisting of;

  • Socks
  • Underwear
  • T-Shirt
  • Fleece
  • Warm Jacket
  • Hat/Headover
  • Boots/Trail Shoes (depending on the weather/terrain)

Eating/Drinking

  • Water (I always take 2L minimum, increase this depending on length of time)
  • Food for X days (You can make homemade ration packs which you can control the content of quit easily)

Example ration pack includes;

  • Cereal bar
  • Chocolate bar
  • Tuna pouch
  • Dried noodles
  • Instant mash potato
  • Stock cubes
  • Tea/coffee & sugar
  • Rice/pasta
  • Instant custard
  • Biscuits
  • Mug (big enough to cook a boil-in-the-bag meal inside)
  • Spoon or Spork
  • Cooking stove and Gas

Other

  • Spare boot laces
  • Map & Compass
  • Head torch & spare batteries
  • Wash kit (tooth brush, toothpaste, soap)
  • First Aid Kit (FAK)

This is the minimum we would take on a wild camp. The closer to a clean water source you are the better and this will reduce the amount of water you have to hike to your camp spot. The optional extras below are just a few ideas, please feel free to comment and add your own to the list.

Optional Extras

  • Hip flask (with your favourite tipple)
  • Ipod
  • Camera
  • Head Net (for midges)
  • Walking Poles
