Herl Fly

Herl Fly
fly fishermen,I would like to find some definitions?

I’m new to trout stream fishing,so I bought a book. BARR FLIES by John S. Barre. Can you tell me what a goose biot is,or herl.

A biot is a barb taken from the leading edge of the flight feathers on various birds, in this case…a goose..

Biots are relatively stiff and tough, with a somewhat translucent quality. Their shape is very triangulated in profile…much different than barbs from other feathers. They also take dye readily.

In use, biots are sometimes used to imitate tails on nymphs. They also work well as legs and antennae on large nymphs, such as some stoneflies. When imitating smaller insects, such as mayflies and caddis, a biot can be wrapped from the tail to the thorax, rendering a very imitative abdomen.

FYI, goose biots are great for imitating tails/legs/antennae, as well as bodies on small flies. Turkey biots are longer and are better suited to creating bodies on all but the smallest flies.

In fly tying terminology, herl typically refers to the long, iridescent, soft barbs taken from the tail (“eye”) feathers of peacock. Herl also describes the long, fluffy barbs taken from the tail feathers of ostrich, emu and similar birds.

In use, several herl barbs are secured to the hook, twisted together, and then wound along the shank to produce the body of the fly. Some of the best subsurface flies, such as the Prince nymph, use peacock herl. It has been long known to have great attractive qualites.
