Blown head gasket or a blown wallet..!?!?!?

Unfortunately my old 1988 corolla seca has or may be* has a blown head gasket, i see it emitting white smoke and it smells like unburnt fuel or whatever kinds and it heats up a bit too quickly now. I went to a mechanic and by making the same note i.e. (emits white smoke and heating up) it hold me it was a blown head gasket (no checks were made to confirm it).. anyway I bought this old bomb for about AUD$1000 so i woudn’t really worry about it too much as to an estimated price of fixing it was AUD $1500 that the mechanic told me. However, if you guys/girls/experts belive its an expense worth it, i wouldn’t mind fixing it. But i’m just a bit too tempted by the thought of buying another car like a 2nd hand mazda 3 hatch.. however, the less I spend the better it will be to replay my loan, so honest opinions would be more than welcome… Just want to know what would be the ideal solution to this kind of a situaiton.. and yeah i’m not bill gates!

I think when a car begins to get in that age range, it is better to not put more money especially that much money into it, unless the car is a classic. Because sometimes a blown head gasket in a engine that size, unfortunately there could be some damage to the engine block as well from the hotter temp. Need to invest in something a little newer. Hope this helps.
