How do i Know if my African Grey Parrot is sick?
I just bought a African Grey Parrot yesterday and it is like coughing not coughing but it is just like sneezing in a way is it sick? how do i know? please answer back to my question.
All new birds should get a “well bird” check up from an avian vet within the first few days of coming home.
Greys definitely sneeze (to clear their sinuses of their own dander, after preening), but they don’t cough (that’s strictly mimicking). Most of the time you will not notice your bird isn’t feeling his best (they hide their symptoms very well – being prey animals). When you finally do recognize that they are sick, it’s because they are unable to hide their symptoms anymore and they are VERY sick. Keep an eye on how much food your Grey eats, and how often they poop and what their poop looks like.
A healthy appetite is always apparent in a healthy bird. One that picks at their food and consumes little is not doing well, and should be checked by a vet.
Bird poop consists of three parts: solid (brown to green), white (urates) and clear liquid (urine). If their poop is very watery (and they haven’t been a lot of fruit), this is a warning sign. If there’s any red in it and they haven’t been eating anything red, this may indicate blood in the stool, and if there is a lack of liquid in the poop (mostly solids) then the kidneys could be having problems.

When a bird can no longer hide his symptoms, you will notice that they are lethargic (slow to move), remain fluffed (trying to keep warm), and sleep as much as possible (little or no activity.) If your bird is just not himself, you should always consult with a good avian vet. They will understand your concern and take the matter seriously.
Dog & cat vets are accustomed to having lots of time to diagnose sick animals, as most mammalian companions show their symptoms much sooner, being that they are predatory animals.
Avian vets understand that time is of the essence in treating birds, by the time a bird is obviously sick, they may be just hours from death.
