Fritz Black

Fritz Black
What breed is my black and white cat?

I’ve done research, but all i came up with was a Tuxedo cat. But it’s said that there are various breeds with this color pattern, so it really isn’t a breed, it’s just the colors resembling a tuxedo.

If cat personality helps, then:
She is on the friendly side and very vocal; she likes to sit on my lap a lot. She is active too.

I have some cute pictures of her too, her name is Fritz and she’s almost 3 years old. I have no idea how else to determine her breed so help and thanks!!!!!

Fritz is a striking girl, I REALLY like the sort of geometrical markings on her face! with a mask on one side. and that perfectly placed tiny black spot on her chin. I like her ears too. :-)

You’re right that “tuxedo” is not a breed, it’s just an unofficial nickname for cats who have black and white markings that look like they are wearing a formal black jacket and white shirt..But Fritz does NOT look like that, her pattern is closer to a saddle than a tuxedo jacket.
As others have already said, the proper term for her colour / pattern is Black and White Bicolour.

As for breed, no breed. Now I’ll make a stab at explaining that. :-) Cats are not like dogs where the majority are some particular breed and the rest are mostly a mix of a few breeds that a knowledgeable dog person can usually recognize, with some of them being a mix of many breeds.
There has been MUCH less human control of cat breeding over the years than of dog breeding. Pedigreed cats of specific breeds are only about 3% of cats. The vast majority of cats have just bred randomly on their own, and they have a mix of genes from the general cat population in their part of the world. (In that way they are more like a wild species than many other domesticated animals) They come in a wonderfully varied array of colors, patterns and fur lengths and they’re referred to as “Domestic Shorthairs” or “Domestic Longhairs” which just means no particular breed / ancestry unknown.

One reason I wanted to answer was the mistaken use in some answers of the breed name “American Shorthair”. which people often (understandably) mix up with the term for cats of no breed “Domestic Shorthair” .

Breeders have for a long time selectively bred some of the shorthaired cats from the general cat population, preserving the old type of the hardy shorthaired working cat of the USA, as they were before mixing with cats imported later; and selecting for beautiful colours and patterns. These cats are similar to the British Shorthair breed but a bit less massive and cobby. At first, the breeders called their cats “Domestic Shorthairs”. while “American Shorthair” was a term in common use for random-bred cats. though some may have also used Domestic Shorthair for that.

But then ( i think it was in the 1960s) that they changed the breed name to “American Shorthair”, to emphasize the national origin.
And the terms “Domestic Shorthairs” / “Domestic Longhairs” have really become established (by vets, shelters, researchers etc. as well as people in general). as meaning non-breed / random-bred cats — the cats affectionately known as “moggies”.

It’s understandable that people who don’t know a lot about cat breeds would incorrectly use the term “American Shorthair” for shorthaired moggies in the USA because they ARE shorthaired and they ARE American, plus years ago that really used to be the term in general use for them. And even though the cat fancy started in the 1960s using that term for a breed, it’s not like the general population immediately got that message; many people continued to call the moggies “American Shorthairs:”
But to be technically correct, “American Shorthair” has for 50+ years been the name of a breed of pedigreed cats. http://www.tica.org/public/breeds/as/intro.php
And “Domestic Shorthair” means a shorthaired cat of no particular breed / unknown ancestry.

Lara St. John often displays her anatomy on her CD covers, but she has more to offer than that. In this entertaining collection, she plays freely and on a very large scale, just what gypsy music requires. It may not take much intellect to play Waxman’s Carmen Fantasy (I like Sarasate’s better, anyway). But it does take intellect, and lots more, to play Bartók’s Second Rhapsody as convincingl…

Fritz Lang’s first major success as a director was with this exotic, globetrotting adventure. Hart) and his arch nemesis, a secret criminal organization known as…
