Large metallic green-gold flying beetle, what is it?
The beetle looks like pictures of the Japanese beetle but it is about the size of my thumb. When it flies it hovers like a hummingbird (sort of). IN the immediate vicinity, I have a green ash, mugwort, lambsquarter and roses growing… Can anyone identify this for me?
The June beetle has a velvety covering to it. This beetle is a shiny iridescent green gold.

This beetle was flying through my garden–I thought it was a bee with its buzzy flight. Suddenly it dove into the mulch. Captured and posed. It played dead very persistently, a characteristic of this genus. I had to wait, still, over it about 20 minutes for it to become alert for photos. Compare the similar, but larger and more abundant, Green Fruit Beetle, Cotinis nitida. Note the scutellum (triangular area at base of elytra) not covered by pronotal projection. See BugGuide account. Euphoria is a fun genus for the beetle-watcher–members are diurnal, and the eastern species can be told apart at a glance.
