Do you think you can really spook a trout with a bad drift or slapping or dragging the fly over the hole? ?
I’ve thought about this alot, because I’ve been with guides who give me casting clinics while were fishing in a hole, dragging the fly and slapping it over the hole to teach me proper technique. Then on the next cast they’ll catch a fish in the same hole. I thought trout were supposed to spook easy, and on that note why is a proper presentation even importantt?
Predators spook trout. Fishing flies do not.
An artificial fly moving unnaturally in/on the water will cause the trout to realize it’s a counterfeit.
The result: The trout will typically “go off the feed” temporarily. However, it isn’t uncommon for a trout, possibly a different one, to be caught on a subsequent, proper presentation.
If it was your presence, however, that caused the trout to spook, it would likely stay off the feed until the threat of you no longer existed in its short term memory.
