Do i really need a huge 10′ pole to surf fish?
Where i fish is in the gulf of mexico over in treasure island, florida. The water at the beach is pretty mush calm not many waves. Do i really need a huge pole? Im not casting over any waves? Any tips for surf fishing would be great…especually shark
You don’t NEED a 10FT rod but it’s the best “overall” size for a variety of situations.
Mostly what the length of the rod does is allow you more “leverage” for a LONGER CAST. Depending on what beach/bay you are fishing MOST of the time you need to be able to lob your bait at LEAST 40-50 Yrds off the beach.
Each “foot” you add to the length of your rod you gain another 10-15 yards.
Other options?
You can use a lighter line (or a braided line) and get the same casting distance with a shorter rod. However, (If you decide to use a lighter Mono line) you risk a big fish breaking the line.
Braided line is a good combo for Beach fishing because it has a GREAT diameter VS strength ratio. A braid like Power Pro 10/40 , (shown here- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_44282____SearchResults ), works well as a line. However, you MUST use a Mono (or better yet- Flurocarbon) leader. The drawbacks of Braid? It’s expensive…….and has poor abrasion resistance……and you ALWAYS have to use a leader of Mono or Fluro.
In any regard, the LOWEST length you would want to go with a Surf Fishing outfit would be 7′ – 8′ .
Remember, you still need to cast HEAVY lures and weights with your outfit. Bigger/longer rods can take the punishment of regularly casting 4-6OZ of weight!!! And if your “hot & bothered” to catch Sharks you will need the leverage a longer rod has to help you LAND bigger fish.
If I were you, I’d decide between an 8 footer, (with braid) or a 10 footer, (with Mono).
