My Three Favourite Things to do when in London

In London, the capital city of England, there is something for everyone to make their visit a memorable one. There are over three hundred museums and more than two hundred art galleries in London. There is always an exhibition, show or event happening somewhere in London.

London’s four major international airports make it very accessible to the rest of the world. London offers a variety of transportation options. Using public transport in London is easy and can be the easiest and cheapest way to get around. There are hundreds of things to do in London and there are many fascinating places to visit. Here are a mere three of London’s most popular sights and attractions for your London visit.

Buckingham Palace – Buckingham Palace is one of England’s most famous palaces and is the official home of Queen Elizabeth II. Every summer the doors of the State Rooms are open to the public. This palace has a long and colourful history since the time of King George III who acquired it for his wife Queen Charlotte.

George IV decided to convert the house into a palace. The Palace became the official residence of Queen Victoria in 1837. During ceremonial occasions, the Royal family still use the State Rooms to receive and entertain guests. The rooms are lavishly decorated and have some of the finest French and English furniture in the world. The walls are adorned with paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Poussin. Annual exhibitions and regular tours also take place in the 29-acre gardens. This is definitely a must see when on holiday in London.

The British Museum – The British Museum is world renowned for its collection of objects exploring the history and culture of man. Over seven million objects are housed within its walls. The museum was founded in 1753 and houses exhibits which range from prehistoric to modern. The Rosetta Stone, the Portland Vase and the Parthenon Sculptures are a few of the most notable items on display there.

There is a world-renowned collection of Egyptian mummies as well as a tomb-like room which is dedicated to the life of Negamun, a wealthy Egyptian. Other areas of interest in the museum include Watches and Clocks, Medieval Europe and the Percival David collection of Chinese Art, which is well worth a visit. The glass-domed Great Court is the museum’s central hub. It is the largest covered public square in Europe and was designed by Lord Norman Foster. This is a fascinating place that you could spend days in and never see everything.

The London Eye – The modern icon that is the London Eye - also called the Millennium Wheel - is a must see when visiting London. A “flight” on the London Eye will give you a whole new perspective on this beautiful city. One of London’s most famous modern landmarks, this streamlined dominates the skyline standing at an impressive 135 metres. You can see a full 360-degree view of the city through the glass pods. On a clear day you can see twenty five miles in all directions.

As well as getting a birds-eye view of London’s sights, such as Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, and Canary Wharf, on a clear day you can see as far as Windsor Castle. Just one revolution at its slow and steady pace takes about half an hour. It is extremely popular, so expect long queues for tickets and boarding. If you are planning in advance, save time by buying your tickets online. Depending on your needs, you can find a variety of packages on offer. Buying a Fast Track ticket will help you avoid the queues, allowing you to check in 15 minutes before. If the fancy takes you it’s possible to have a glass of champagne or a personal London guide. This is the best and only way to get a true panoramic view of the city.

There is just so much to do here that you may want to return often. It is easy to get around London by taxi if you have the need or the budget, as the cabs are numerous!London has minicab operators which are both licensed and unlicensed. Similar to New York London is well known for its cabs which are black rather than yellow and are called Hackney Cabs. You should stick to using these licensed taxis rather than the often less reliable “minicabs”.

All of London’s main airports – Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead and City – also house car hire companies if you prefer this option to public transport. You can easily find both self-drive and chauffeur-driven vehicles for hire at the airports.

Any hired car rental agreement should be read thoroughly so that you know what excesses and such you will have to pay in the event of an accident. Other specialist insurance products such as gap insurance, car warranties and breakdown insurance will generally be taken care of by the hire car company so you do not need to worry about these things. Do however make sure to ask for details as to what you should do if you experience a breakdown and at all costs make sure that cover is for a 24-hour breakdown service! Additional insurance products may be offered – such as windscreen insurance or key insurance – to give you added peace of mind but which will undoubtedly cost you more. Don’t sign before you have read the document carefully first! It’s often better to stick with a larger car hire firm such as Hertz, Budget or Avis.

Although hiring a car is a great way to get to your hotel or Bed and Breakfast, the public transport is excellent in the United Kingdom. There are regular trains to and from all of London’s major railway stations and several trains per hour to Brighton, a vibrant and cosmopolitan seaside resort often dubbed “London-by-the Sea”.

London is an amazing and beautiful city, no matter what time of year that you visit. There’s always something to do in London, be it sights, shows and events or bars and clubs. As the famous Samuel Johnson quotation goes:

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”.

House of Flying Daggers

House of Flying Daggers

$5.65

No one uses color like Chinese director Zhang Yimou–movies like Raise the Red Lantern or Hero, though different in tone and subject matter, are drenched in rich, luscious shades of red, blue, yellow, and green. House of Flying Daggers is no exception; if they weren’t choreographed with such vigorous imagination, the spectacular action sequences would seem little more than an excuse for vivid hues…
