How far should my horse fencing posts be spaced apart?
I am renovating my horse fence. I only have 2 older horses, so they don’t even go near the fence, the weather isn’t bad here, once in awhile it gets a storm or two, but not serious. I am using wood posts, and they sit about 3 feet in the ground. I am spacing them about 16 feet apart. I have 1& 1/2 inch poly tape that is electric. I have the corners reinforced with extra posts and so on . Is my spacing ok? It holds up fairly well. Some say 16 is perfect, while others say 8 is too close together. There is a girl down the road who has her posts about 16 feet apart and she uses the same fencing, except she uses the electro-braid. Tell me what you think!
If you’re going with electric fencing, then I guess the 16′ spacing would be adequate.
I’m always looking at “down the road” possibilities, though, like resale value of the property; so, if it were me, I’d go the extra expense of spacing the posts more like 10′ apart, center to center.
Should you ever decide to enhance the appearance by adding wood boards, your lumber expense will be less for an 8-10′ board, than it will be for a 16′ board.
If you were talking wood fence, I’d go with 8′ spacing, for the strength and again, for the reduced expense if I had to replace rails.
