How long does it take to chant 16 rounds of the ( ISKCON / Hare Krishna ) mahamantra?
I’ve been interested in Hare Krishna lately and recently found out that Hare Krishna devotees are expected to chant the mahamantra daily on japa mala, which are like Catholic rosary beads. There are 108 beads on a string of japa mala and there is a minimum requirement of 16 rounds of chanting per day.
I just timed myself chanting the mahamantra a couple of times and it took me an average of about 10 seconds to chant the full mantra.
(10 seconds/chant) * (108 chants/round) * (16 rounds/day) * (1 minute/60 seconds) = 288 minutes, or 4.8 hours.
That doesn’t seem right to me. Can anyone confirm/deny this approximation? Five hours of chanting a day sounds absurd. I mean, that’s fine for ascetics, but for congregational devotees, that’s just overkill. I’m a student and I don’t have five hours a day to give!
you are not expected to do all 16 rounds right off the bat. i’ve been a devotee for about 6 years and i am sorry to say that i don’t chant my full 16 rounds every day like i should at this point. it is more important to slowly build up to 16 rounds by setting goals and staying consistent every day.
with that being said, it takes most people about 2 or 2 1/2 hours to chant their 16 rounds. the longer you chant, the quicker you get. but don’t forget it’s not a contest of speed either 
just take you time now, it’s more important to chant one round every day than to think you have to do all 16 and then you never have time to! good luck, feel free to message me with any questions!
