Striped Bass – How to Bass fish – Bass Pro Tips – Tip 1: Finding Striped Bass

We are now midway through October and are in the prime Striped Bass fishing months which generally stretch from September to December

Striped bass can be found and feed throughout their range, from calm inlets to sandy or muddy flats, in the wild surf of a stormy day and many miles from the sea in fresh water rivers.

Stripers like to feed in the low light conditions of twilight and through the night into the dawn, although they also feed and can be caught during daylight hours, especially in the spring and fall. They are often harder to catch under the bright sunlit days of summer.

Almost invariably when seen feeding in shallow water there will be deep water nearby. This is particularly so of the larger specimens. My advice is to survey your fishing spot, looking for holes or deeper gullies between the waves. These are the places you will find the big’uns.

Some of the better spots for catching stripers are the following:

Island Beach State Park

  • This state park is a popular hot spot for striped bass fishing, especially from September to December. Anglers can fish for striped bass by boating, surfcasting or with a beach buggy. This area is ideal for catching striped bass because of a 10-mile stretch of sandy beach with sandbars that trap deep holes reaching down to 20 feet just within casting distance from the beach, according to “Mid-Atlantic Game & Fish Magazine.” This buildup of sandbars provide an excellent structure for holding forage and thus attracting stripers.

Sandy Hook Rip

  • Located in the north side of New Jersey, Sandy Hook Rip is one of the best locations for striper fishing. Striped bass congregate around the swashbuckling area off the hook where the tide changes. Surfcasters can also easily fish the area. The drastic change in the area’s water depth causes the rip and the abundance of game fish such as stripers and bluefish. Effective techniques include using lures such as plugs, plastics and poppers to draw strikes from striped bass. Local anglers like to use 4-inch or 6-inch Bombers and A-Salt Bombers as well as 4-inch Stillwater Beachrunners plugs.

Cape May Rips

  • Cape May Rips is a striper hot spot located at the southern tip of the state. It is an area of numerous shoals with shallow waters that collectively attract stripers because of the vast schools of bait and other forage that gather in it. Large schools of stripers in the 10- to 20-pound range are commonly found in the area. Using live eels as bait on simple bottom rigs is one of the best techniques for striper fishing at Cape May Rips, advises Gary Caputi from “Mid-Atlantic Game & Fish Magazine.” Jigging the bait with chartreuse and white-colored bucktails along with a flag of squid is particularly effective. The best time to fish is during early fall through winter.
